JOB SUMMARY


The Senior Director of Quality Services provides value added direction to The Wine Group through leading the Quality Services department, guiding TWG’s winery labs, and fully utilizing resources both within and external to the TWG family. This role is responsible for strategy development, both short and long term, which provides direction on the day-to-day execution of the TWG Quality Services department. You will champion quality and food safety to ensure TWG products are safe, comply with regulatory requirements, and meet or exceed customer and consumer expectations. You will identify and drive QA process standardization through best practices, new technology and methodologies, and recognizing opportunities that eliminate waste and mitigate risk to the company and consumers. You will proactively build strong business relationships, both internally and externally, and serve as a resource and subject matter expert on aspects of product quality, specifications, and food safety. You will build and led the Quality Services team to meet a wide range of ever-expanding departmental responsibilities and provide professional growth opportunities to the team to ensure sustained success.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Champion quality and food safety for consistency and sustainability:

  • Drive standardization on all quality aspects from grape/wine chemistry, finished package quality, and food safety across all facilities and levels within TWG
  • Collaborate with colleagues throughout the organization to achieve and maintain an accurate and consistent flow of information and execution of quality processes and procedures
  • Fully utilize and optimize the Quality Services department as TWG’s primary resource for lab instrumentation and analytical method development
  • Oversee development and implementation of SOPs, processes, and training across all TWG labs for analytical chemistry
  • At all TWG packaging sites, implement and develop systems that ensure compliance with all food safety, quality, and legal requirements to be performed by operations, such as sanitation validation, dissolved oxygen management, package quality, and any other value-added checks, verification, validation, and associated records
  • Record, retain, and be prepared to report on any data managed by Quality Services
  • Make data driven recommendations and decisions that directly impact the quality of our products such as establishing shelf-life specifications for Bag-in-box, can and tetra products

Quality Services - focused on Customer Service:

  • Provide tools and strategies and set expectations to ensure timely and accurate data and information sharing. Provide recommendations to all customers, internal and external, who have a stake in the processes from grape to glass and vineyard to consumer. Customers include winemaking, operations, logistics, supply chain, material vendors, co-packers, customer service, distributors, sales and marketing, and others who can utilize the knowledge and skill of Quality Services for the betterment of TWG and the consumer
  • Lead efforts to develop and provide TWG responses to internal and external inquiries on wine quality, packaging quality, food safety, standard compliance, consumer complaints, or any topic requiring the perspective of Quality Services

Risk Mitigation:

  • Drive robust and efficient detainment, evaluation, and rework processes of non-conforming finished goods to enhance the customer and consumer experience as well as minimize risk to the company
  • Oversee generation of product destruction orders
  • Own and lead the TWG product market withdrawal and recall process
  • Actively research current and upcoming wine and package regulatory changes/updates, working to anticipate potential future risks. Communicate findings to senior leadership and make recommendations to take steps to mitigate. These include FSMA, FDA, USDA, OIV, LCBO, DTSC, State Regulations, etc.
  • Support efforts to evaluate developing regulations which require more sustainable packaging materials and formats and contribute recommendations to TWG leadership for appropriate paths forward
  • Participate in Wine institute working groups as appropriate

Specification Development

  • Oversee and validate case and pallet sizes, weights, configurations in JDE (Enterprise Software) for internal and external customers
  • Oversee development and manage the finished product quality specifications and response plans for all manufacturing sites
  • Establish and manage product quality and package compliance information as part of the Product Data Management corporate process as well as for the daily product specification work orders (GI Sheets) that drive the production at all bottling facilities including co-packers
  • Lead and participate in the Shelf-life evaluation process of finished goods

Lead Quality Services Team:

  • Key driver of all Safety policies and procedures for the Quality Department. This includes overseeing safety audits, incident investigations, implementation of Company-wide safety policies and relevant safety training. Must lead by example
  • Hire, manage and develop team members
    • Identify high performing lab managers and technicians; mentor and encourage their development and growth
    • Provide regular and ongoing feedback and direction to the Quality Services Management Team, which includes TWG’s Food Safety Systems Manager, Senior Quality Manager and Quality Services Process Manager
  • Provide corporate package material design recommendations, validation, and approval, i.e., review and sign off on new case CADs for sizing and determining label placement specifications based on glass, marketing desires, operational constraints
  • Oversee budgeting for Ripon lab and all TWG Lab Capital Expenses
  • Oversee the Quality Services department functions and responsibilities including, but not limited to:
    • Analytical Chemistry
      • Develop and maintain quality standards and product specifications
      • Package quality and GMP audits
      • Microbial evaluation
      • JDE Specification Management for bottling including co-packers.
      • Non-Conforming Finished Good Process (QC HOLDs)
      • Finished goods case and package specifications
    • Food Safety Systems Leadership
      • HACCP program development and standardization
      • 3rd party Food Safety certifications.
      • Development and maintenance of corporate statements of guarantee for regulatory and food safety compliance for TWG Vendors.
    • Packaging Material Quality
      • Specifications, vendor qualification
      • Issue identification and resolution (PMRN Process)- Vendor involvement
      • Facilitate Test Plan process for quality
      • Package development recommendations/approval (i.e., box size approval)
      • Generate and provide product Certificates of Analysis for varied domestic and international markets through TTB Certified chemist program
      • Site audits – TWG facilities, packaging material vendors, co-packers
  • Provide leadership to team in support of TWG’S safety culture, fostering active participation from all Ripon Lab employees through creative motivation, leadership, and accountability to ensure we all go home safe

QUALIFICATIONS

  • BS in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Food Science, Microbiology, or related field with 10+ years of experience in a similar role within a CPG environment, preferably alcoholic beverage industry for 15+ years or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Knowledgeable in wine and food safety regulations
  • Strong planning and organizational skills to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Competent in computer software programs including Microsoft Excel, Word, Access, and Power Point, JDE. SharePoint. Ability to work with pivot tables, graphs, macros and perform other data analysis in Access and Excel
  • Must possess excellent interpersonal skills and be an effective communicator and collaborator to build strong relationships with colleagues at all levels within the company. Ability to speak and present effectively before groups with good persuasion skills
  • Excellent project management skills with ability to manage multiple projects and competing priorities
  • Demonstrated problem solving skills, with ability to make well-reasoned and timely decisions based on careful, objective review and informed analysis of available considerations and factors. Ability to support decisions or recommendations with accurate information or reasoning

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Must be able to frequently lift and carry weights of up to 50 pounds at varying frequencies
  • Possess the ability to work in a fast-paced production environment
  • Working environment is both indoors and outdoors, with exposure to related equipment and noise levels
  • Ability to perform tasks requiring bending, stooping, standing, and twisting in the performance of various task in the laboratory environment
