The Vice President, Controller has overall responsibility for the leadership and management of the corporate accounting functions of The Wine Group, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, treasury, general ledger, and annual audit. This position will direct the establishment of the company’s accounting policies and procedures, oversee the monthly financial reporting cycle, manage the annual financial audit and treasury, payroll, and accounts payable functions. The ideal candidate will have a comprehensive knowledge of US GAAP and be responsible for determining the appropriate accounting treatment for complex transactions impacting the company and the adoption of new accounting pronouncements. This role is eligible for virtual work. 


  • Provide leadership and direction for the corporate accounting functions in accordance with the overall strategic direction of the company
  • Oversee accounting functions to include accurate and timely reporting of the company’s financial statements to facilitate management decision-making
  • Manage the accumulation and consolidation of all financial data necessary for an accurate accounting of consolidated business results
  • Ensure integrity of financial transactions and financial reporting
  • Manage and serve as a key contributor to the annual financial audit, including drafting financial statements and disclosures
  • Responsible for the accounting documentation and analysis of all material transactions, including acquisitions and dispositions, minority interests, impairments, and debt refinancing
  • Oversee and provide guidance on new accounting pronouncements to determine impact to the company and oversee implementation as needed
  • Responsible for developing and overseeing Executive Finance department budget
  • Develop, manage, and improve internal controls, fraud detection and prevention, accounting policies, and chart of accounts
  • Work collaboratively with FP and A team to provide financial statements and management reports for analysis
  • Identify and champion process improvement opportunities
  • Review FX exposure and implement strategies to reduce volatility as needed
  • Responsible for derivative accounting including interest rate swap hedge accounting treatment
  • Review investment portfolio and seek and recommend opportunities in line with investment policy
  • Work closely with outside lenders and complete and submit any required compliance documentation
  • Develop cash forecasting model


  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business
  • Active CPA is required
  • Minimum of ten years of experience in private accounting and at least three years of management experience in financial accounting or equivalent
  • 4+ years of experience from a Big 4 public accounting firm desired but not required
  • Experience with enterprise accounting systems specifically JD Edwards desired but not required.
  • Experience and background in manufacturing and/or agriculture desired but not required
  • Strong understanding and experience in application of US GAAP financial reporting requirements
  • Advanced knowledge of accounting processes and best practices
  • Advanced Excel skills
  • Ability to work both independently and as a leader in a dynamic environment with multiple and competing priorities

  • Able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds at varying frequencies
  • Ability to perform tasks requiring bending, stooping, standing, and twisting in an office environment.
  • Limited travel to other facilities in California as required
