Summary / Primary Role

Under limited supervision, the Lead Mechanic for each shift will assign daily work order’s, provide instructional guidance and minimal oversight to Mechanics in the performance of repairs and maintenance on tractor(s) and trailer(s) in compliance with Federal and State regulations.  The position has no direct supervisory responsibilities other than to serve as a coach and mentor.

 

Essential Functions:

  • Establish and maintain positive and professional relationships with co-workers(s), carrier(s), vendor(s), and driver(s).
  • Enforce maintenance standard operating procedures including adherence to OSHA regulations and PPE requirements.
  • Participate in hazard assessments of environment and provide recommendations to management on the purchase or replacement of PPE, tools, and machinery.
  • Knowledgeable in the safe operation of all tools, diagnostic equipment, lifts, hoists, and jacking equipment.
  • Certified forklift operator with ability and responsibility to train and certify mechanics.
  • Review work orders and assist the Service Writer in the delegation of repair assignments to mechanics.
  • Provide instructional guidance to mechanics and utility workers on tasks assigned, and ongoing mentorship and training for continued education and development of mechanics.
  • Foster an environment of continual education on systems, processes, technology that is available within the Company and industry through individual participation.
  • Provide supervisory guidance in absence of Service Writer and provide feedback to management on mechanic performance, training and disciplinary needs of mechanics.
  • Participate in supervisory discussions for performance and discipline as needed, or requested.
  • Perform preventative maintenance inspections on tractors, trailers, and converters.
  • Perform routine maintenance services such as oil changes, lubrications, and tune-ups.
  • Expert in identifying, diagnosing, and repairing power tractor systems, including but not limited to; emissions, fuel, internal and external engine, electrical, transmissions, drive axles, air conditioning, cooling, steering, APU’s, tires, etc.
  • Expert in identifying, diagnosing, and repairing trailer systems including but not limited to; brakes, lift axles, ABS, tires and electrical.
  • Make all other general repairs and/or adjustments on vehicles in accordance with company and manufacturer specifications.
  • Ability to weld both aluminum and steel.
  • Maintain a clean and orderly shop floor and parts room and assist in evaluating needs and identification of replacement parts, tools, and equipment.
  • Participate in parts inventory when requested.
  • Participate in company training programs, safety events, company functions and meetings when requested.
  • Adhere to maintenance, shop rules and safety regulations.

  • Review work orders and discuss work with supervisors and other assigned mechanics.
  • Follow applicable checklists to ensure all important parts are examined, including belts, hoses, steering systems, spark plugs, brake and fuel systems, wheel bearings, and other potentially troublesome areas.
  • Discuss and plan work procedures with supervisors and other assigned mechanics using charts, technical manuals, and personal experience.
  • Test and adjust repaired systems to meet manufacturers’ performance specifications.
  • Confer with drivers to obtain descriptions of vehicle problems and to discuss work to be performed.
  • Disassemble units and inspect parts for wear using micrometers, calipers, and gauges.
  • Preventative maintenance inspections on tractors, trailers, and converters.
  • Perform routine maintenance services such as oil changes, lubrications, and tune-ups.
  • Inspect, repair, reline, replace and adjust brakes.
  • Inspect repair and replace tires.
  • Make all other general repairs and/or adjustments on vehicles in accordance with company and manufacturer specifications.
  • Maintain and repair shop equipment.
  • Maintain a clean and orderly work environment
  • Participate in parts inventory when requested.
  • Participate in company training programs, safety events, company functions and meetings when requested.
  • Assist in training and development of new mechanics.
  • ALL OTHER DUTIES AND PROJECTS AS ASSIGNED.

Job Specifications:

  •  High School Diploma or GED equivalent is required
  • A minimum of two years of experience working with heavy diesel equipment is required.
  • Must own and maintain adequate hand tools.
  • Ability to read and comprehend manual, wiring diagrams, schematics, diagnostic tools, etc.
  • Knowledge of Federal, State, OHSA, EPA and DOT regulations is required.
  • Commercial Driver License (CDL) is preferred.
